Who does like Tom Ford? Well Yves Saint Laurent sure doesn't

(CNN) -- American fashion designer and film director Tom Ford has revealed he received angry letters from his predecessor and rival Yves Saint-Laurent. Ford, 49, took over Yves Saint-Laurent's eponymous fashion house in 1999 when parts of it were sold to the Gucci group, where Ford was creative director. And the designer says that while the pair started as friends, the relationship soon soured -- to the point that Saint-Laurent, one of the pioneering figures in 20th Century fashion, accused Ford of ruining his reputation.

Even in public comments, the Frenchman had made no secret of his disdain for Ford's taste. "He was supportive at the beginning," Ford told CNN's Talk Asia. "He loved the fact that we were buying the company, and he loved the fact that I was designing, and he had been very complimentary of my work at Gucci. "We were quite friendly, and had dinner a few times, and my first collection, I had him up to show it to him.

"Our business was doubling and doubling and doubling, and when I started to get great press and the business started to become very successful, Yves became really quite hostile. "I have letters that he wrote to me about it, you know: 'In 13 minutes on the runway you have destroyed 40 years of my career.' "I am really happy I have them -- they are written in his own hand. When I'm 85, maybe I'll put them in a book -- if anyone cares." Ford left Gucci in 2004, before setting up his own label -- Tom Ford -- something he told CNN had previously frightened him. "I guess what I feared was that with many designers, they sell their own labels, they lose control of their labels, perhaps things are then created which then go very much against their taste level.

"Your name is a funny thing. It stands for what you're about and everything I do is really about pride. "I don't work for money any longer. I'm fortunate enough not to need to work for money, but I work for pride, I work because I love to work, and so the idea that one could lose control of one's own name and that things could be produced with your name on that you were not proud of scared me." The designer has also broadened his career path in recent years, moving into film with the award-winning Christopher Isherwood adaptation "A Single Man," starring Colin Firth as a gay British university professor unable to cope in 1960s Los Angeles after the sudden death of his partner.

Ford told CNN the shift towards Hollywood "felt totally natural." "I know a lot of people in the film industry, and everyone was incredibly supportive. There's a line that people in Hollywood can 'nice you to death', so you have to take it with a grain of salt, but they were incredibly polite, incredibly supportive. "It wasn't until after I had made my film that almost every interviewer said: 'What was it like, making a film and having it turn out as a success when everyone thought you were crazy?'

"And I thought 'People thought I was crazy? You mean people didn't actually think I could do this?' "I had a very clear picture of what I wanted the film to be, and I'm not going to say that there weren't things that I learned and that I didn't know, but directing a film is not that dissimilar to being the creative director of a large fashion house. "First of all, you have to have a vision; that's the most important thing. Why does anybody need to see a Tom Ford film? Why does anyone need a Tom Ford jacket? So you have to have something to say.

"Then you have to hire a great team of people to help you realize that vision, and you have to create an environment where those people can be creative, and give you their very best."Then you have to slowly guide carefully that team of people to help you realize your vision. So the dynamics of film directing and fashion design -- in the ways that I've done it -- were not dissimilar." Saint-Laurent retired from the fashion industry in 2002, and died in June 2008 of brain cancer at age 71.

Beyonce is already in the works to launch a second fragrance titled Heat Rush. With industry sources predicting sales of $100 million from Heat, it was only right for the superstar to create a follow-up fragrance.

WWD reports, “While Heat is billed as an overtly sexy fragrance, Heat Rush is intended to be more of a daytime fragrance, noted Steve Mormoris, senior vice president of global marketing for Coty Beauty.”

Heat Rush is slated for a February 2011 release. The fragrance will be initially sold in 3,000 department and specialty stores including Macy’s. By May, 50,000 stores worldwide are expected to carry the fragrance. The scent was formed by Firmenich’s Honorine Blanc and is a mixture of passion fruit sorbet, blood orange and Brazilian cherry; a heart of yellow tiger orchid, mango blossom and orange hibiscus, and a drydown of teak wood, honey amber and Rio sunset musk. Eau de toilette in four sizes will be sold: 0.5 oz. for $24, 1 oz. for $39, 1.7 oz. for $49 and 3.4 oz. for $59. Two ancillaries will also be produced: a 6.7 oz. shimmering body cream, $24, and a 6.7 oz. shower gel, also $24.

Ethnicity Model Management CEO LaShawnna Stanley has been providing the hottest in minority model talent for companies, including MTV and BET, for more than a decade, striving to showcase a diverse view of beauty.

Ethnicity Models CEO LaShawnna Stanley has expanded her brand into Web commerce.

The 40-year-old industry vet took what she learned – and earned-- in corporate America to start her own clothing store and eventually, the agency, a company whose image was once linked with that of raunchy music videos and scandalous vixens. Through the years, Stanley has transcended such a stereotypes, expanding her client list to include Chevrolet, Burger King, KFC, and international fashion houses.

BlackEnterprise.com talked with Stanley about why she stuck with her niche, how she continues to advocate integrity in the industry, and how the Web has helped her continue growing her business.

Why did you start Ethnicity Models and what niche were you tapping into when you first started?

I wanted to model when I was younger, and there wasn’t a market for ethnic girls unless you were 5’9 or size 2.

I would have models in the store [in Miami] and I liked the way the girls looked wearing the clothes from my boutique—the curvy women. I would have fashion shows to promote the clothing in the store. And from there, Ethnicity Models came about.

There really was no market for ethnic women back then. I started at the same time when hip hop was becoming mainstream, and they wanted models to reflect the urban market.

Your agency is often attached with the negative image of the ‘video girl.’ How have you been able to surpass the stereotype and keep your business expanding for so long?

In the beginning, you didn’t see us in commercials and print ads. They let us in in the video market. Did we make some mistakes and do shoots that were raunchy? Yes we did. But we learned from our mistakes.

Those mistakes helped me learn to babysit my brand to ensure that it didn’t turn in the wrong direction. I decided to be selective and not do raunchy shoots. I’d ask for the lyrics or for information about what the video would entail. I’d also ask about the styling of the models.

Now, we’ve done fashion shows internationally, and we’ve had clients contract models for films, commercials, and marketing campaigns. Keeping it classy, not raunchy, left the door open to do other things. In really taking a stance and not compromising what I felt was right, even though I was trying to grow a business-- that got noticed.

You’ve grown your business, venturing into Web with Ethnicity Talent, which includes social networking for models and other industry professionals. What led you to do that?

Now that everything is on the Net and easily gets viral, you can use that to maximize your exposure. Everything is viral and mobile. You can start almost any type of business from home with very little overhead cost in this business.

This is a way for models and other professionals to gain exposure and have access to our talent.

What should an entrepreneur know or have before starting a model management company?

Protect your brand and have integrity. Integrity is No. 1. That will take you a long way, Stanley says. “There’s a fine line between people not wanting to deal with you, and people respecting you. Be likable but firm,” she adds.

You have to have people skills. Ninety-nine percent of business in this industry is referrals, she says.

Get informed and do your research. Get online and figure out who’s who and what’s in demand.

Be aware of what type of clientele you want to attract. Get a nice selection of models with tasteful images. Once you get the models and build a Website, reach out, and develop a network.

Become the best at what you do so that people will want to come back. I was confident about my product. I’d say, 'I have the best models, so you have to call me back.'

Singer Mary J. Blige is coming out with a new eyewear collection. Mary states that people have suggested a collection from her for a while, “People were always saying, ’You should do an eyewear line.’ So I said, ’Let’s do it’”. This new line called Melodies by MJB will be released in October at Nordstrom and Bergdorf Goodman. The collection will be comprised of four styles: an aviator shape (Incognito), classic oversize (Red Carpet and MJ’S) and a geometric retro style with side cutouts (showtime). They will be available in four to six colors. Two more styles are set to be added later on in the year.

Blige teamed up with Orange 21 to create her new line of sunglasses. Jimmy Lovine, chairman of Interscope Geffen A&M Records, her label, recommended the manufacturer.

In 1947, the brand introduced the famous "Bamboo Bag" - which would quickly become one of the biggest selling and timeless pieces that Gucci would make. This time, a difficult one in Italy's history, would prove to be a growing period for the brand.

The trademark green and red web was developed and trademarked in the 1950's. Inspired by the saddle girth and moccasin, the dressage theme of Gucci continued throughout this decade. Guccio died in 1953 and his son Aldo, along with his other sons Vasco, Rodolfo, and Ugo, took over the company and led it to massive international success by opening the company's first boutique in New York. Familial disputes rippled through the descendants on issues as personal as inheritances to corporate decisions and the operations of the stores.

The 1960's saw Gucci's role in the international luxury market expand with stores opening in Paris, London, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and throughout the U.S. It was during this time that they adopted the interlocking G logo that now emblazons most of the design house's wares, introduced the Flora scarf that would become a celebrity favorite, and debuted the Jackie O bag.

While business seemed to boom, and celebrities were flocking to Gucci for the latest it-item, a storm was brewing behind the scenes, as the brothers' poor business decisions had led the company to near bankruptcy. In 1982 Maurizio Gucci, son of Rodolfo, took the helm and Gucci became a public limited company.

Uberto Gucci joined the family business, and in 1984 took on the role of Vice President of the Gucci Parfumes Branch. This, following a stretch of family troubles, one of which ended in a courtroom, led investors to seek new leadership in the design house. In that same year, Domenico De Sole became the president of Gucci America, and Investcorp bought the remaining 50% of the company that had belonged to Aldo and his children, two acts the irrefutably saved the company.

In 1994, Tom Ford was named the creative director and launched a global redesign of the brand's image. The luxury brand was injected with an air of provocation and exoticism.

This, paired with Donemico De Sole's appointment as CEO, transformed the brand from a mismanaged family run business to a successful luxury empire.

In 2006, upon Ford's departure, the former Creative Director of Accessories, Frida Giannini, became the sole Creative Director of the brand.

Her past with the brand and cohesive vision helped the brand to maintain its title as a force in the industry.

The brand's licenses, accessories, and signature collection make Gucci one of the most desirable aspirational fashion brands in the world.

Who may that be? Why would you ask that....It's the one and only Super Star Producer/DJ Don Cannon.

In our chat with DJ Don Cannon he talks about everything from how he first introduced to music to the future of Cannon Music LLC. Check out our interview below with Producer/DJ Don Cannon.

How old were you when you decided that being a DJ and producer is what "Don Cannon" was placed on earth to do?

At the age of 5yrs old I knew that I was going to be a DJ. My uncle introduced me to rapping and djing and it was a wrap after that. So when I was around 11 I wanted to be like Shaq. He had the game on LOCK, see he played for the NBA and was dropping rap albums. I wanted to be that! But eventually I stuck to djing, then I started producing.

What are you more passionate about "Producing or Djing" ?

First it would be djing because I do it for fun and I love seeing the crowds reaction, especially when I can get the crowd movin around so much to where they're about to pass out! Now when it comes to producing it's more private process. I'm usually in a totally different frame of mind. Sometimes I'm very serious in the studio, at other times I may act crazy. Your really major in hosting mixtapes. What is your signature style or swag that people can't get enough of?

When I wake up every morning I look forward to what I do. So my swag or signature sound is natural. I'm just me when I put together a mixtape. I know that's what people want so that's what I give them.

We know that your from Philly. Do you think that being from there has alot to do with being one of the biggest & most successful producers in Atlanta?

Yes for sure. I got the best of both worlds! My sound is a combination of an east coast flow mixed with a dirty south bounce. So I became popular from a signature sound and I also was doing something that other dj's that came to Atlanta from other southern states (Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas etc.) were not doing. They didn't talk over mixed tapes, but I did. See all east coast dj's talked over mixed tapes, but down south dj's never took that step or even heard of it. So that was a huge advantage that I had over most of the dj's Atlanta. And from there I took over the mixtape scene.

Your signature producing sound seems smooth yet you can still get crunk in the club. How do you create the balance?

I just have fun with it. I don't have a particular technique, I just start with an idea and go from there.

So your newest project is Drake | Don Cannon | Soul Cookin "Thank Us Later" remix album. Tell us about that...

Well this isn't anything new, Soul Cookin and I just remixed his new album "Thank Me Later". Soul Cookin is famous for producing "The Game vs. Jay-z" and a number of other remix albums. Also, Drake has been friend of mine for many years. We chop it up about music all the time. So when we remixed "Thank Me Later" he was really a surprise and happy that we did it.

How does "DJ Don Cannon" get his creative juices flowin when making beats in the studio? Some people light candles, play Playstation/XBox, pop bottles...What helps you bring out your creativity?

Whatever mood I'm in I create music. I don't drink or smoke to get in a creative zone unlike other dj's/producers. Sometimes I look at art or watch a movie to get inspired when making music. I try to imagine the frame of mind that the artist or director was in when they created their work. That always works for me. Also, artist/directors have to switch it up themselves from one project to another. It's the same with music. You do what works for you to reinvent your work.

When you get dressed for the studio or event, what look do you go for? Do you plan around what sneakers are you wearing, shades, watch or hat? How does "Don Cannon" you get fly?

I typically get dressed based on my mood. My signature style is me wearing anything from G Star to Billionaire Boys Club. And I own over 700 pairs of sneakers, my collection is crazy. I used to wear alot of jewelry, but now I prefer to wearing just a nice watch instead. Overall, I want people to be inspired by what I do and not what I wear. So I try to keep my style the same, moderate and humble.

What do you see in the future of Cannon Music, LLC?

There are a number of new and upcoming artist that I prefer not to name because I don't want to give them "The Big Head" that were working/negotiating contracts on. I'm extremely happy about that. In the future I hope to have Cannon Music to be a working artist label like Bad Boy Music.

What advice do you give to aspiring DJ's?

Praying in number one. That is a big important part that you have to include in your life. It helps blessing come through, get's you through the good and bad, & it keeps you balanced. Prayer also opens doors that you didn't think that could open. It also keeps you at peace so that you can remain focus. Last, patience is also needed. If you have those two your liable to conqure anything.

Once again we're starting our week off with yet another "Old School Sunday" celebration. Every Sunday is dedicated to one of the most memorable models in "our" fashion history. Today we're featuring Supermodel Khadija Adam.

Khadija (above) originated from Nairobi, Kenya. She was a beauty queen (Miss Africa) and in 1985 she went to London to do the Miss World pageant where she selected as an finalist.

A photographer called her up and suggested that she go to Paris to meet fashion designer Yves St. Laurent.

Her debut with Saint Laurent led to the cover of Cosmopolitan (above). She received tremendous exposure and won an exclusive makeup contract with Saint Laurent cosmetics, the first transracial line to feature a Black model and the first to be named after an individual (Khadija).

Unfortunately, in the 1980's, people wrote nasty letters because a black woman represented this line. Sales went down and the line didn't last long.

At her peak, Khadija generated $350,000 per year in income.

Back in 2008, we brought you the Land Rover LRX concept. Now it looks like Range Rover has adopted the former concept and turned it into a reality naming it the Evoque. Meet the Creative Design Executive, Victoria Beckham behind the new breed to the Range Rover family.

Beckham will also share her creative sense of style on all future products of the brand, starting with the Special Edition Range Rover Evoque. Land Rover announced the collaboration with Victoria Beckham during the 40th anniversary celebration of Range Rover at the Orangery at Kensington Palace. The Range Rover Evoque will make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show at the end of September and will go on sale in Europe in the summer of 2011 and will hit the U.S. and other markets in the fall of 2011.

A rendering of the future Bugatti Veyron SuperSport has leaked onto the internet. The supercar is equipped with a 8.0-liter W16 quad-turbocharged engine that delivers 1200HP and can reach 0 to 60mph in 2.2 seconds. The top speed on this car is 264mph.

The Veyron SuperSport will be limited to only 30 units, and carry a price tag of $2 million. Bugatti will also offer a naked carbon fiber body option that will add another 100,000 euro ($122,000 at the current rates) to the car’s price.
The Bugatti Veyron SuperSport will make its official debut in August at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

Once again we're starting our week off with yet another "Old School Sunday" celebration. Every Sunday is dedicated to one of the most memorable models in "our" fashion history. Today we're featuring Supermodel Alva Chinn.

Former Halston supermodel Alva Chinn was the first African-American woman to purchase a Ferrari (in cash) in the United States; her Ferrari was red. Designer Oscar De La Renta is the godfather to Chinn's son.

For black models, the defining moment of change took place at Versailles on a date to remember: November 28, 1973. For the first time ever, a group of Black American models-no longer isolated, individual stars-walked off an unusually opulent runway and onto the pages of history.

The scene was set: The stage of the Opera House at the Sun King's imperial chateau. Five American fashion designers were invited to show their work along with five French couturiers. The home team: Pierre Cardin, Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent and Emanuel Ungaro. The American visitors: Bill Blass, Stephen Burrows, Halston, Anne Klein and Oscar de la Renta.

Although the numbers were even, the match seemed to favor the Europeans. They were, after all, playing on their own court. But, the American designers had a secret weapon, Black women. African-American women were the surprise element, the shock troops on the runway. Billie Blair, Alva Chinn, Pat Cleveland (above), Norma Jean Darden, Charlene Dash, Bethann Hardison. Barbara Jackson, Ramona Saunders and Amina Warsuma. The most dramatic moment came when Bethann Hardison stalked down the runway in a tight-fitting yellow silk halter by black designer Stephen Burrows. Singer Mary J. Blige will become the latest celebrity with a fragrance when her scent 'My Life' debuts this summer. The name of the scent comes from her well-regarded 1994 album. Blige who is an ambassador for and investor in the beauty brand Carol's Daughter is creating her fragrance with the company. The scent won't appear in stores but will be sold through the Home Shopping Network beginning July 31.Carol's Daughter's products have appeared on HSN before and have been a huge hit. HSN is also filming vignettes of Blige's life that will be part of the HSN sales pitch.

The fragrance is described as having top notes of gardenia petals, Bartlett pear and white freesia with a heart of tuberose, blooming jasmine, gold lily and apricot flower and base notes of cashmere woods, praline, sesame and incense. It will sell for $46 for 1.7 ounces and will be sold with a clutch purse. One dollar from every bottle sale will go to her foundation, the Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now. The America's Next Top Model host said: "The last time I was with IMG, I was set on taking on the modeling world in the high fashion and commercial sectors. Now I'm dreaming even bigger but this time for my company as well.

"Aligning myself with brands that I believe in, and helping them achieve the kind of success they're looking for, helps all of us as we grow our businesses."

As part of the new deal, Tyra will participate in commercial endorsements and other fashion-related opportunities.

If you’re in the market for a new car but decided you just rather rest you will probably be interested in picking up the E.S. Kluft & Co. Palais Royale mattress which is being called the most expensive in the world. According to the WSJ:

Some people might say $33,000. That’s the price of E.S. Kluft & Co.’s hand-tufted, king-size Palais Royale mattress and box spring, currently the most expensive American-made mattress set on the market. The company says it has sold about 100 since introducing it in 2008. Or maybe it’s $44,000—the price tag on Kluft’s Sublime model, which the company has teed up for a launch later this year.

Earl Kluft, chief executive of E.S. Kluft, a family-owned company based in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., says it takes 10 craftsmen about three days to make the Palais Royale, which contains 10 layers and more than 10 pounds of cashmere, mohair, silk and New Zealand wool that has been washed, dried and crimped. Natural latex foam and certified organic cotton are among the materials used to reduce motion transfer and provide cooling. The Sublime has a layer of horsehair for resiliency.

At the high end, other mattress options range from Hollandia International’s “3-D fabric,” with raised fibers creating ventilation, to a customizable mattress from Organic Mattresses Inc., featuring layers of latex in varying firmness that are stacked to suit the customer. Some mattresses have aloe vera or lavender built into the top layers; a luxury mattress from Magniflex, an Italian line, is covered with fabric containing 22-karat gold.

Zulekha, Daughter of Iman, Takes the Load Off

Zulekha in Swahili means “brilliant one.” Its Islamic translation is “beautiful.” Yet, ask Zulekha Haywood, the once 330 pound woman, who just happens to be the daughter of the former supermodel, Iman, and Olympic basketball player, Spencer Hayward, if there was ever a time when she felt unworthy to bear her name, her answer might surprise you.

In fact, Zulekha has managed to surprise us all, as the now 31 year old has decided to disclose that, over the course of her life, she has managed to do what so many kids who are born in the shadow of entertainment icons have failed to do, along with countless others who are born to less than famous parents but still feel the pressure of matching the frame they see in photos plastered in magazines and on billboards. Ask Zulekha what sets her apart from the millions of children that commonly settle in either category, and she will tell you that she managed to be happy.
At 330 pounds or at her current weight of 180, this 6 foot brilliant beauty has claimed to have always been happy, and that despite public opinion her drastic weight loss wasn’t brought on by her desire
to match society’s standards, to feel more accepted by her athletic father, or even to feel a hint of comfort in the presence of her oh so glamorous mom. Simply put, Zulekha has explained that her primary reason for dropping the pounds was to improve her health.

“I tried pretty much the standard fare,” Haywood told Gifford and Kotb, the hosts of the Today’s show. “I tried SlimFast, Atkins, Jenny Craig, some those fad diets like the cabbage soup, and lemon juice. All of them worked for a while, but I would always gain the weight back plus interest.”

Zulekha’s predisposition to obesity, seemly brought on by her father’s side of the family, was one that she, as well as her parents, was well aware of since her childhood days, after being given the news by a well respected physician. “There was no pressure at home for me to fit into any sort of ideal,” Haywood told Gifford and Kotb. “At home, I am a daughter to a mother and a father. At the end of the day, they (her parents) just want me to be healthy.”

In the end, Zulekha’s pathway to better health was gastric bypass surgery-- a controversial procedure that makes the stomach smaller and allows food to bypass part of the small intestine. She underwent the surgery three years ago for the benefit to feel full more quickly than when her stomach was its original size, leaving her with less calories and thereby more weight loss. Unfortunately, what Zulekha didn’t expect was a serious complication, which often occurs with such a risky procedure, affecting her life. This shocking effect of the surgery landed Zulekha in intensive care, where she found herself fighting for her life.

Fully recovered now, the new face and figure of Zulekha hasn’t turned her any more Hollywood than her bloodline produced. An active blogger of “The Daily Illusion”, this wordsmith, as she likes to call herself, is no predictable princess. She is the exception---the odd truth that uncovers that there is no vanity or despair tucked away in her bio. There are no missing pages of a forgotten child stuffing her mouth with edible deserts in hopes to pacify some inner pain. There are no images of this girl later locking herself inside of a bathroom, hovering over the toilet with a finger down her mouth. No flashes of her holding a razor in the palm of a hand as she stares into a mirror, cursing herself, willing and ready to carve hate signs in to her arms or slit her wrists, as so many would assume given her background. If this is what you expected to read about the daughter of the famous model and athlete who lost a drastic 160 pounds, I’m sorry to disappoint you. For although, Zulekha may have carried a substantial amount of weight since she was eight years old, the darling diva had never had carried such baggage.

When…Indian Vogue launched a political campaign cover to tackle colour prejudice in the country's culture seen in the demand for skin-whitening creams. The celebratory skin tone cover featured supermodels Gia Johnson, Nethra Raghuraman, Tinu Verghese, Ashika Pratt and Miss India Esha Gupta on its April 2010 issue.

"Skin colour matters a lot for women in India," Nirupama Singh, an expert on the sociology of fashion told the Times newspaper. "Fairness is a very valuable thing here, looked on as desirable. The fashion world can be a big agent for change in this area."

"Every generation has its share of beauty myths. Perhaps it is time to bust this one," the editorial says. "Time to say that as a magazine we love, and always have loved, the gorgeous colour of Indian skin...dark, dusky, bronze, golden - whatever you call it, we love it."

GUCCI GOES GREEN WITH NEW ECO-FRIENDLY PACKAGING

Gucci is taking the initiative to go green by implementing new eco-friendly packaging. The fashion brand wants to reduce dependence on materials and use 100% recyclable paper in packaging, so their revamping all packaging from the shopping bags to the gift boxes and even as little as to the tissue and ribbon that they use.

The new shopping bags are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified and are made of 100% recyclable paper. All plastic laminated surfaces have been eliminated from shopping bags and boxes. The tissue paper is no longer coated and both ribbon and garment bags have been switched from polyester to cotton. Gucci is even going to replace all of its mannequins with a much better eco-friendly version, designed by Frida Giannini, which will be made of shockproof polystyrene.

Starting in June 2010, approximately 284 flagship stores worldwide will be taking part in the eco-friendly packaging. Patrizio di Marco, president and CEO of Gucci, said: “The world’s leading brands are rightly judged today not just on the quality of their products and services, but also on the way they act in the community and towards the environment.”
